What Absolute Black looks like
Absolute Black is the stone for people who want black and nothing else: no flecks, no veins, just a deep uniform surface. Australian suppliers often sell it as Indian Jet Black. The best grades come from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, and the grade matters more here than with any other granite, because a premium slab is truly black while cheaper ones are charcoal with a brown cast.
Because it is so uniform, Absolute Black is also the most faked granite on the market. Lower grades are sometimes dyed or resin-treated to look darker. We supply untreated stone and tell you exactly which quarry it is from.

Where Absolute Black works best
Kitchens with a minimalist edge
Leathered Absolute Black under matte black or timber cabinets is one of the defining looks of new Australian builds. It suits slim 20 mm edges and integrated undermount sinks.
Pool copings and outdoor steps
Flamed Absolute Black is one of the few black stones that works around pools. It is dense enough for salt and chlorine water. Flaming turns it charcoal-grey and gives grip for wet feet.
Memorials and signage
Its dense, even grain takes fine engraving, which is why most headstones in Australia are Indian black. We also cut plaques and engraved panels.
Absolute Black compared
- Absolute Black vs Black Galaxy
Black Galaxy adds golden flecks and costs slightly more. Absolute Black is the cleaner, more architectural black.
- Absolute Black vs Steel Grey
Steel Grey is the lighter, cheaper option if pure black would make a small kitchen feel dark.
Care and sealing
Avoid harsh cleaners on polished black, which show dull spots first. To check for dye, rub a hidden spot with acetone on a white cloth: genuine Absolute Black leaves no colour. Honed and leathered tops need a quality impregnating sealer at install.
Pairs well with
Matte black or oak cabinetry, concrete-look floors, white walls, brushed nickel, and greenery for contrast.

Absolute Black granite questions
Straight answers on price, finishes, sealing and shipping.
01 Is Indian Jet Black the same as Absolute Black?
Yes. Indian Jet Black is a common Australian trade name for Indian Absolute Black granite. The grade (how black it is) varies by quarry, so compare slabs side by side rather than by name.
02 How can I tell if Absolute Black granite has been dyed?
Wipe a hidden edge with acetone on a white cloth. If black comes off, the stone has been dyed or coated. Genuine Absolute Black stays clean. We supply untreated slabs and state the quarry on your quote.
03 What is the cheapest way to get an Absolute Black benchtop in Australia?
Buy the slabs direct. Indian Absolute Black from us is about $145–$240 per m² incl. GST against $286–$484 at Australian yards. A local fabricator can then cut and install it, or we can supply it pre-cut to your drawings.
04 Does Absolute Black show fingerprints?
Polished and honed black show smudges more than any other colour. Leathered Absolute Black hides them best, which is why it is the most requested finish for Australian kitchens.
05 Can Absolute Black be used around a saltwater pool?
Yes, in a flamed finish. It is dense enough to resist salt, and flaming gives a slip-resistant, grey-black surface. Ask for an AS 4586 slip-resistance test report for your batch.
06 How long does Absolute Black granite take to arrive in Australia?
Plan on 6–10 weeks from slab approval to arrival at your nearest port (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Fremantle or Adelaide), plus customs clearance and local delivery. Your written quote confirms the shipping schedule.
